Counselling tends to be shorter-term for help with a life event (bereavement or separation for example), whereas therapy involves working on longer-term issues.
My integrative approach is open-ended to allow either or both to take place, depending on your situation.
After completing my Level 4 CPCAB Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and supervised placement at OTS, I met the qualifying criteria to become a registered member of the BACP (registration 412010). This demonstrates that I have met their high standards of professionalism and that I adhere to their ethical framework which has been designed with effectiveness and safety in mind. This includes regular meetings with a clinical supervisor.
Some people see a counsellor to get them through a difficult stage in their life and to learn some coping techniques. This is usually short-term work and can take place between 6 and 12 weeks. Others will look for therapy to help develop a deeper understanding of themselves and bring about a fundamental shift in being. In these instances, a longer term therapeutic relationship is formed with me that will last as long as you feel is needed and helpful.
Yes, with few exceptions, such as if there was a serious concern for your safety or a legal requirement to disclose information. The terms of our agreement will be discussed in your first session where there will be an opportunity for you to have any other questions about the nature of the work answered. Having a clear understanding of how we will work together is an important part of developing the trust that is needed for an effective therapeutic relationship.
A regular and consistent routine is recommended to get the most out of therapy, but with notice we can cancel or reschedule sessions to allow for holidays and other commitments.
No, but I can arrange a referral if or when this is required after you have started personal therapy.
